Continental’s gravity treads, chosen by terrain. Kryptotal: its most versatile gravity tyre, for mixed terrain, with separate front (Fr) and rear (Re) patterns. Argotal: loose terrain, dust and loam — cornering stability, side grip and an open, self-cleaning tread. Xynotal: dry, rocky and hardpack ground — fast rolling with contact edges for traction and braking, popular with bike-park riders. Hydrotal: the mud specialist, a downhill tyre with a self-cleaning tread, made only with the Downhill casing and SuperSoft compound.

Trail, Enduro or Downhill casing?

Continental’s three gravity casings, from lightest to toughest. Trail (3/180 TPI): a light, durable single-ply carcass for trail riding, which Continental says performs comparably to the Enduro casing. Enduro (3/330 TPI): a durable single-ply carcass with Apex protection against snakebites. Downhill (6/660 TPI): the most durable, reinforced carcass in the gravity line-up. Each step adds weight — Continental lists the Xynotal 29x2.40 at 1060 g in Trail Endurance, 1165 g in Enduro Soft and 1335 g in Downhill SuperSoft. All are Tubeless Ready and hookless compatible to their limited maximum pressure.

Endurance, Soft or SuperSoft?

Continental’s gravity compounds, from longest-lasting to grippiest. Endurance balances grip and endurance, with high durability and good rolling resistance. Soft is for descending-oriented trail and enduro riding: high grip with reasonable rolling resistance, run front and rear or on the front only for extra grip in trail and all-mountain riding. SuperSoft is for downhill and enduro where descending is the focus — for riders with a 100% focus on grip, traction and control.

Is this Continental tyre hookless compatible?

Yes, within limits. Continental’s catalogue states that this tyre is hookless compatible to its limited maximum pressure and asks you to check the wheel manufacturer’s instructions and the tyre packaging. The packaging lists the maximum inflation pressure and the maximum inner rim width, which can differ between hooked and hookless rims.

Q: How do I set up a Continental TR tyre tubeless — and can I use an inner tube?

Both work: Continental designs its Tubeless Ready (TR) tyres to run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting it recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre; spin the wheel to spread the sealant, pump to the allowed maximum pressure, and check the pressure again before your next ride.

Xynotal tread design

Built for rock and hardpack: angled in-line shoulder studs for predictable transitions, a pronounced positive profile with many contact areas for grip on hard and slightly loose surfaces, and pronounced ramps in the direction of rotation for easy rolling. Continental says it offers low rolling resistance and contact edges for traction and braking.

Tubeless Ready (TR)

Continental says its TR casing is robust against damage and penetration from foreign objects, and that TR tyres can be run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting Continental recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre: spin the wheel to spread it, pump to the allowed maximum pressure and check the pressure again before the next ride.

E-bike approval

Continental draws on more than 100 years of moped and motorcycle tyres for its e-bike tyres. Tyres marked E25 are approved for e-bikes up to 25 km/h; those marked E50 are also certified for S-Pedelecs up to 50 km/h. Continental says their structure gives high puncture protection and low rolling resistance, and protects against the premature wear caused by the extra driving force.
