Is the Tempo Artica R5 GTX waterproof?

Yes. Fizik says it is fully waterproof thanks to an insulated, PFAS-free GORE-TEX Cirrus XT membrane, which also lets sweat vapour out. A brushed-fleece lining adds warmth, a Velcro strap closes the ankle and the R5 sole has no vent holes on this winter version. At 319 g it is heavier than Fizik’s summer Tempo models — that is the insulation.

Tempo Artica or Terra Artica GTX?

Same winter recipe — GORE-TEX Cirrus XT membrane, fleece lining, Velcro strap plus BOA L6 — on different soles. The Tempo Artica is for road pedals: R5 nylon road sole, stiffness index 6, 319 g. The Terra Artica GTX takes off-road clipless cleats on the X5 sole, with studs and a rubber coating over the whole surface for grip when you walk (index 5, 432 g). Road bike in winter: Tempo. Gravel, MTB or lots of walking: Terra.

How stiff are Fizik’s Tempo and Transiro soles?

Fizik rates each sole on a stiffness index where higher is stiffer. Here: the R5 nylon composite sole (Tempo Powerstrap R5, Tempo Artica GTX, Transiro Hydra) is 6, the R4 carbon-injected nylon sole (Tempo Overcurve R4 and R4 Wide) is 7 and the full-carbon R3 (Tempo Decos Carbon) is 10. Fizik describes the R5 as supple and comfortable over long distances, the R4 as a balance of comfort and pedalling efficiency, and the R3 as a stiff sole for optimal power transfer.

Why does Fizik set the cleat further back?

On its newer soles — the R3 of the Decos Carbon, the R4 of the Overcurve R4 and the redesigned R5 of the Artica GTX and Transiro Hydra — Fizik places the cleat slightly further towards the heel than traditional placement. Fizik says this improves pedalling efficiency and reduces knee compression, especially in aggressive, forward aero positions. If you are coming from another shoe, re-check your cleat set-up rather than copying the old position.

Which size of Fizik road shoe should I buy?

Measure your foot from heel to longest toe and look the length up in Fizik’s size guide, which maps foot length to EU, US and UK sizes — 270 mm is EU 42, 277 mm is EU 43. Built for bad weather

Fizik describes the Tempo Artica GTX as a fully insulated, waterproof and breathable winter road shoe, built to protect you from severe cold and wet weather.

GORE-TEX Cirrus XT membrane

An insulated, PFAS-free GORE-TEX Cirrus XT membrane makes the shoe fully waterproof, Fizik says, while sweat vapour escapes through billions of tiny pores for warmer, drier feet. Fizik adds that it is designed with a reduced carbon footprint.

Brushed-fleece lining

Against frozen toes, a brushed-fleece lining adds a soft layer of comfort and, Fizik says, extra warmth for long rides in low temperatures.

Velcro strap + BOA L6

A two-part closure: a Velcro strap wraps around the ankle for a locked-in feel, and a single BOA L6 dial secures the lower foot, adjustable on the fly.

R5 outsole, unvented

The redesigned nylon R5 outsole gives comfort and moderate stiffness (index 6). The cleat sits slightly further back than traditional settings to improve efficiency and reduce knee compression, and on this winter version the sole has no vent holes, to keep feet warm and dry.
