Is the MW702 waterproof?

Shimano describes its GORE-TEX Insulated Comfort liner as waterproof, keeping feet warm and dry in cold, wet weather. On top of that a wide shield covers the laces and BOA dial, a tall cuff shuts out water, and a fleece-lined insole adds insulation.

Both are SPD winter shoes on the DYNALAST last with a fleece-lined insole, a tall cuff and 360° reflectors. The MW702 adds a waterproof GORE-TEX Insulated Comfort liner (the MW502 uses a DRYSHIELD membrane), a BOA L6 dial you can use with gloves (the MW502 has speed laces) and an ULTREAD XC sole; Shimano rates it stiffer at 7 against 5. Weights are close: 405 g against 391 g (EU 42). For regular riding through wet winters, the MW702; for cold, mostly dry days, the MW502.

Can I use the MW502 or MW702 on my road bike?

Only with SPD pedals. Shimano lists both as SPD shoes, so they take 2-bolt SPD cleats, not 3-bolt SPD-SL road cleats. Shimano recommends the PD-ME700 or PD-M540 for the MW502 and the PD-M8100 or PD-M8120 for the MW702.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.
