Tempo Overcurve R4 or Tempo Decos Carbon?

Choose by sole and closure. The Decos Carbon has a full-carbon R3 sole at stiffness index 10 and a bi-directional BOA Li2 dial, and Fizik lists it at 205–218 g. The Overcurve R4 has the R4 nylon sole with 15% carbon (index 7), a BOA L6 dial and the Overcurve ankle collar, at 230 g. For the stiffest pedalling platform, the Decos; for all-round riding with a little more give, the R4 — which is also the one we stock in a Wide version.

Overcurve R4 Wide or standard?

Go Wide if the standard shoe pinches across the ball of the foot. Fizik says the R4 Wide has a higher-volume fit with more room at the forefoot, around the ball of the foot and the metatarsals. Sole (R4, index 7), listed weight (230 g) and the size table are the same as the standard R4, so you take the same size in both.

Tempo Powerstrap R5 or Tempo Overcurve R4?

The Powerstrap R5 closes with two Velcro straps (instep and midfoot set separately) and has the R5 nylon composite sole at stiffness index 6; Fizik lists it at 255 g. The Overcurve R4 closes with a BOA L6 dial, has the stiffer R4 sole with 15% carbon (index 7) and weighs 230 g. The Powerstrap is the simpler shoe and the lowest-priced Tempo at Fizik’s list prices; the R4 is lighter, a little stiffer and adjusts with one dial.

Why does Fizik set the cleat further back?

On its newer soles — the R3 of the Decos Carbon, the R4 of the Overcurve R4 and the redesigned R5 of the Artica GTX and Transiro Hydra — Fizik places the cleat slightly further towards the heel than traditional placement. Fizik says this improves pedalling efficiency and reduces knee compression, especially in aggressive, forward aero positions. If you are coming from another shoe, re-check your cleat set-up rather than copying the old position.

Which size of Fizik road shoe should I buy?

Measure your foot from heel to longest toe and look the length up in Fizik’s size guide, which maps foot length to EU, US and UK sizes — 270 mm is EU 42, 277 mm is EU 43. Every Tempo and Transiro model uses the same table, Wide versions included: Wide adds volume, not length. Fizik makes half sizes; we stock whole EU sizes.

Advanced construction

A resilient polyurethane-laminated material over a comfortable mesh. Fizik says it reduces energy loss and gives long-lasting foot support where it’s most needed, while the mesh adds ventilation.

Overcurve

Fizik’s Overcurve construction has a staggered collar that wraps the ankle, tracing the line of its two bony protrusions (the lateral and medial malleoli), so the throat curves over the foot from the outside to the inner side. It closes with a single micro-adjustable BOA dial.

R4 outsole

Moderately stiff (index 7) to balance comfort and pedalling efficiency: a lower-profile nylon sole infused with 15% carbon fibre, with internal channels for ventilation. Fizik sets the cleat slightly further towards the heel than traditional placement to improve efficiency and reduce knee compression.

BOA L6 dial

Fizik closes the Overcurve R4 with a single micro-adjustable BOA L6 dial, which it describes as fast, reliable and secure.
