The Powerstrap R5 closes with two Velcro straps (instep and midfoot set separately) and has the R5 nylon composite sole at stiffness index 6; Fizik lists it at 255 g. The Overcurve R4 closes with a BOA L6 dial, has the stiffer R4 sole with 15% carbon (index 7) and weighs 230 g. The Powerstrap is the simpler shoe and the lowest-priced Tempo at Fizik’s list prices; the R4 is lighter, a little stiffer and adjusts with one dial.

How does the Powerstrap closure adjust?

With two Velcro straps. Instead of pulling the two sides of the upper together, a ribbon wraps around the foot; one strap sets the instep and the other the midfoot, which Fizik says gives a customised fit and compression (its Volume Control principle). Fizik lists the Tempo Powerstrap R5 in a regular fit only.

How stiff are Fizik’s Tempo and Transiro soles?

Fizik rates each sole on a stiffness index where higher is stiffer. Here: the R5 nylon composite sole (Tempo Powerstrap R5, Tempo Artica GTX, Transiro Hydra) is 6, the R4 carbon-injected nylon sole (Tempo Overcurve R4 and R4 Wide) is 7 and the full-carbon R3 (Tempo Decos Carbon) is 10. Fizik describes the R5 as supple and comfortable over long distances, the R4 as a balance of comfort and pedalling efficiency, and the R3 as a stiff sole for optimal power transfer.

Powerstrap

Fizik says most Velcro closures simply pull the two sides of the upper together; on the Powerstrap a ribbon wraps around the foot instead, giving comfort and containment with just two straps.

Volume Control

The two straps follow the principle of Fizik’s Volume Control: instep and midfoot are adjusted separately, which Fizik says gives a fully customised fit and compression.
