Rapid compound

“Efficient, fast and agile”: when speed and acceleration on the flat and on climbs are all that matters, Continental says the Rapid compound is the go-to option — inspired by the compounds of its road, race and gravel tyres, for riders who do not want to compromise on speed. It includes Continental’s BlackChili compound.

Race casing

Continental’s lightest and fastest construction in its MTB line-up (3/330 TPI): a light and supple one-ply build whose fabrics and body compounds are combined for plushness and suppleness, with a reinforced sidewall and crown that Continental says hit the sweet spot between weight, suppleness, tubeless capability and puncture protection. Tubeless Ready and hookless compatible, with a foldable aramid bead; optimised for cross-country and down-country.

Terra Competition tread design

A light-knobbed pattern for light gravel, compacted soils and rough, worn tarmac: an almost continuous centre for uncompromised straight-line speed, more pronounced knobs and drainage elements towards the shoulder for off-road grip, and an overall design that reduces aerodynamic drag. Continental calls it its fastest-ever gravel tyre.

Tubeless Ready (TR)

Continental says its TR casing is robust against damage and penetration from foreign objects, and that TR tyres can be run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting Continental recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre: spin the wheel to spread it, pump to the allowed maximum pressure and check the pressure again before the next ride.

E-bike approval

Continental draws on more than 100 years of moped and motorcycle tyres for its e-bike tyres. Tyres marked E25 are approved for e-bikes up to 25 km/h; those marked E50 are also certified for S-Pedelecs up to 50 km/h. Continental says their structure gives high puncture protection and low rolling resistance, and protects against the premature wear caused by the extra driving force.

Terra Competition: Race Rapid or Trail Grip?

Continental’s own advice: Trail Grip for tougher terrain, Race Rapid for all-out speed. Race Rapid pairs the light, supple one-ply Race casing with the Rapid compound; Trail Grip pairs the adaptive, robust Trail casing with the balanced Grip compound. Both are 3/330 TPI, Tubeless Ready and hookless compatible to their limited maximum pressure. The Terra Competition itself is, per Continental, its fastest-ever gravel tyre — reduced weight and rolling resistance and an aerodynamic design for light gravel, compacted soils and rough tarmac.

Terra Hardpack or Terra Speed?

Both are fast gravel tyres. The Terra Hardpack is at home on compacted gravel roads: a semi-slick, textured centre for a wide footprint and low rolling resistance, robust shoulders for cornering control, PureGrip compound and the ShieldWall System — Continental pitches it for long days on fast gravel and bikepacking. The Terra Speed has a shallow, continuous hexagonal tread for drier, less technical trails and road sections, with BlackChili compound and ProTection. Both are 180 TPI, Tubeless Ready and hookless compatible to their limited maximum pressure (Continental).

Is this Continental tyre hookless compatible?

Yes, within limits. Continental’s catalogue states that this tyre is hookless compatible to its limited maximum pressure and asks you to check the wheel manufacturer’s instructions and the tyre packaging. The packaging lists the maximum inflation pressure and the maximum inner rim width, which can differ between hooked and hookless rims.

How do I set up a Continental TR tyre tubeless — and can I use an inner tube?

Both work: Continental designs its Tubeless Ready (TR) tyres to run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting it recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre; spin the wheel to spread the sealant, pump to the allowed maximum pressure, and check the pressure again before your next ride.

Description

The Terra Competition is Continental’s fastest-ever gravel tyre, built for multi-surface speed: an almost continuous centre, light knobs towards the shoulder and a design that reduces aerodynamic drag, with less weight and rolling resistance — for light gravel, compacted soils and rough tarmac. The Race Rapid build is Continental’s pick for all-out speed: the light, supple Race casing with the Rapid compound. For tougher terrain, Trail Grip.
