Is the Aspen ST a gravel tyre or an XC mountain bike tyre?

Both, in different versions. Maxxis designed the Aspen ST as an ultra-low-profile race tyre for short-track XC — the 29-inch versions use MaxxSpeed rubber. This 700x55 (55-622) is the gravel edition: Maxxis lists it in its Gravel category with its HYPR-X compound, for pavement, dirt roads and gravel, front or rear. Maxxis nicknames the tread the “Fastpen” and pitches it for dry conditions.

What is Maxxis HYPR-X?

Maxxis’s first gravel-specific compound. It blends the low-rolling-resistance HYPR rubber from Maxxis’s road range with the MaxxSpeed compound from its XC race tyres, and Maxxis claims 19% better cornering traction and 25% less rolling resistance. Maxxis introduced it in 2025 across its gravel range (Receptor, Reaver, Rambler, Ravager) together with a stronger nylon for the 120 TPI casing.

Aspen ST, Reaver or Rambler?

All three are Maxxis gravel tyres. The Aspen ST has the lowest, most race-oriented tread — an ultra-low-profile short-track XC design that Maxxis pitches for dry conditions — here in a wide 700x55. The Reaver is what Maxxis calls its “go to” gravel race tyre: a low, fast diamond-knurled centre with meaty side knobs for consistent cornering. The Rambler is Maxxis’s most popular and versatile gravel tyre, with ramped centre knobs for hardpack and asphalt and wider-spaced cornering knobs for variable conditions.

How do I set up the Aspen ST tubeless?

It is Tubeless Ready (TR): Maxxis says it must be used with tubeless-compatible rims and liquid sealant to hold air and seal small punctures, and that you should check and refresh the sealant regularly because it dries over time. Maxxis only allows sealant in its tubeless road, tubular or tubeless-ready tyres — using it in other Maxxis models voids the warranty.

HYPR-X

Maxxis’s gravel-specific compound, combining its low-rolling-resistance HYPR road rubber with the race-winning MaxxSpeed from mountain biking. Maxxis says HYPR-X delivers 19% better cornering traction and 25% less rolling resistance, and pairs it with a new, stronger nylon for the 120 TPI casing for greater tread durability.

EXO Protection

A cut- and abrasion-resistant fabric added to the sidewalls. Maxxis says the densely woven material is lightweight and highly flexible, so the tyre’s performance is unaffected, and recommends EXO for extra durability on gravel, XC and light trail riding.

Tubeless Ready (TR)

Maxxis says running tubeless gives better traction, lower rolling resistance and fewer flats, and lets you run lower pressures for more grip and control. A TR tyre must be used with tubeless-compatible rims and liquid sealant; check and refresh the sealant regularly, as it dries over time. Look for the “TR” marking on the sidewall.
