Which rear tyre does Pirelli pair with the Scorpion XC M or Trail M?

Pirelli calls the Scorpion XC R the optimal rear tyre with a Scorpion XC M at the front, and the Scorpion Trail R the perfect rear with a Scorpion Trail M. Both R models are rear-specific, with a motocross-derived central tread for traction and braking grip.

Is the Scorpion Trail M / Trail R still current?

No. Pirelli listed the Scorpion Trail M and Trail R until its late-2025 catalogue; in 2026 it replaced the Trail range with its Scorpion Gravity tyres. Ours are the SmartGRIP versions on the 60 TPI ProWALL casing.

SmartGRIP compound

Pirelli’s single-compound Scorpion MTB rubber, developed from its motocross and rally experience. Pirelli says it combines tear resistance, for mechanical grip and puncture resistance, with chemical grip on wet ground, and keeps performance consistent as the knobs wear.

ProWALL casing

A casing with a reinforced sidewall: an extra nylon layer that Pirelli says increases resistance to cuts and penetration and stabilises the tyre at low pressure. Pirelli pairs it with 120 and 60 TPI constructions for XC racing, trail and enduro.

Description

The Scorpion Trail M is the most versatile tyre of Pirelli’s Scorpion Trail range: a medium-profile tread for quick, confident trail riding over varied terrain, which Pirelli also calls ideal for downcountry. Bridges between the knobs support them and help shed mud in the wet. It uses the SmartGRIP compound on a 60 TPI ProWALL casing; Pirelli has since replaced the Trail range with its Scorpion Gravity tyres, so this is previous-generation stock.

Medium-profile tread for varied trail terrain; also ideal for downcountry (Pirelli)
Knob bridges for support and mud shedding in wet conditions (Pirelli)
SmartGRIP single compound
ProWALL 60 TPI casing with reinforced sidewalls for cut protection at lower pressures
Pirelli pairs it with the Scorpion Trail R at the rear
