Lactate · MCT pathway

60 mmol of lactate per gel on top of the carbohydrate. Santa Madre explains that glucose and fructose use their own absorption routes, while lactate enters through a separate one — the MCT transporters — adding an extra fuel source to the same strategy. Once absorbed, it says, lactate is used as fuel and also acts as a signal that effort is rising, supporting the body’s response to high-intensity exercise.

Ratio 1:1

Equal glucose-type carbohydrate and fructose, equalising the workload of the SGLT1 and GLUT5 transporters. Santa Madre says it pioneered the 1:1 ratio in its line in 2022 and uses it in its UNUSUAL range for strategies of 90 g per hour or more — which, it stresses, need a trained gut.

Low-density liquid gel

Santa Madre’s gels are made “under liquid technology”: a thin, low-density gel that is easy to take while working hard.

Vegan, lactose- and palm-oil-free

Santa Madre’s data sheet for Lactate 60 lists it as 100% vegan, lactose-free and free of palm oil.

Frequently asked questions

Answered from this product’s published information. Questions about orders or anything else go to our team.

How do I take Lactate 60?

Santa Madre’s guidance: for high-intensity efforts under 3 hours, take one gel right after the warm-up and, if the effort lasts more than an hour, one every 40 minutes. For efforts over 3 hours it gives three levels per hour — 1 gel (40 g carbohydrate, 60 mmol lactate, 250 mg sodium), 2 gels (80 g, 120 mmol, 500 mg) or 3 gels (120 g, 180 mmol, 750 mg); it says level 3 is not for everyone and is meant for professionals. Try it in training before a race.

Does lactate replace carbohydrate?

No. Santa Madre says Lactate 60 does not replace carbohydrate but complements it: each gel still carries 40 g of carbohydrate at a 1:1 ratio, and the lactate is absorbed through a separate route (the MCT transporters) as an additional fuel. These are the brand’s claims; press coverage of the launch notes the approach still has to hold up under independent scrutiny.

How quickly does Lactate 60 act?

Santa Madre gives an activation time of 7–10 minutes, which is why it recommends the first gel straight after the warm-up rather than at the start line.

OFF CAF or 100 CAF — which should I take?

Same formula; the 100 CAF version adds 100 mg of caffeine per serving (Santa Madre compares it to about one and a half coffees). Try caffeine in training first and count every caffeinated product you take that day.

Lactate 60 or Unusual Gel 60CHO?

Despite the similar names they do different jobs. The Unusual Gel 60CHO is Santa Madre’s biggest carbohydrate dose — 60 g in a 70 ml gel at a 1:0.8 ratio, 200 mg sodium, caffeine-free — for efforts over 3 hours. Lactate 60 carries 40 g of carbohydrate at 1:1 plus 60 mmol of lactate and 250 mg of sodium, and Santa Madre aims it at high-intensity and long efforts; it also comes with 100 mg of caffeine.

Can I take 90–100 g of carbohydrate per hour straight away?

Santa Madre says no: high-carbohydrate strategies need an adaptation period — training the digestive system to work during exercise. Build up the amount per hour in training before trying it in a race.

How was Lactate 60 developed?

Santa Madre says it is the result of months of research into lactate’s role in performance and hundreds of hours of testing with athletes, and of the nutrition strategy it used with Yomif Kejelcha — who ran 1:59:41 on his marathon debut in London in 2026, according to Marathon Handbook. It is designed for running, trail running, cycling and triathlon.

Description

Santa Madre’s first lactate gel: 40 g of carbohydrate at a 1:1 ratio plus 60 mmol of lactate and 250 mg of sodium in one fully liquid 70 ml gel. Santa Madre presents lactate as a complement to carbohydrate, not a replacement — absorbed through its own MCT transporters and used, it says, as fuel and as a signal of rising intensity. Made for high-intensity and long efforts in cycling, running, trail and triathlon; OFF CAF or 100 CAF with 100 mg of caffeine.

  • 40 g of carbohydrate (1:1) + 60 mmol of lactate per gel
  • Lactate enters through MCT transporters, separate from glucose and fructose (Santa Madre)
  • 250 mg of sodium per gel
  • Activation time 7–10 minutes; first gel right after the warm-up (Santa Madre)
  • Fully liquid 70 ml gel; OFF CAF, or 100 CAF with 100 mg of caffeine
