Both are Shimano SPD gravel shoes. The RX600 is the bikepacking and adventure shoe: a carbon-reinforced sole at stiffness index 8, a wider outsole with TPU lugs for walking or pushing the bike, and a BOA L6 dial with a strap. The RX710 is the race shoe: stiffness index 9, a low stack height, the Pontoon cleat system, two BOA L6 dials and the new DYNALAST 2.0 last in Standard, Wide and Narrow. For long mixed days with hike-a-bike, the RX600; for gravel racing and fast events, the RX710.

Gravel or MTB: should I pick an RX or an XC shoe?

Both families use SPD cleats, so either works on a gravel bike or a mountain bike. The difference is the sole. Shimano’s RX gravel shoes (RX600, RX710) use TPU outsoles tuned for pedalling efficiency and walking on mixed surfaces. Its XC shoes (XC503, XC703) use ULTREAD XC rubber with spike mounts for grip in mud and on technical ground off the bike. If you mostly ride gravel and walk on hard surfaces, choose RX; for mountain biking, muddy terrain or cyclocross-style running, choose XC.

Which pedals and cleats do these shoes need?

SPD, Shimano’s two-bolt off-road system: the shoes take SPD cleats and work with SPD pedals, not with three-bolt road pedals such as SPD-SL. Shimano’s recommended pairing for these models is the DEORE XT PD-M8100 pedal. The recessed cleat sits inside the sole, so you can walk normally off the bike.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.

BOA L6 dial and surround upper

A BOA L6 dial that Shimano says cinches in seconds for a micro-adjustable, precise fit, on the same surround-wrapping upper as its RX8 gravel shoe. A forefoot strap completes the closure.

Carbon-reinforced sole

A carbon-reinforced nylon sole at stiffness index 8 that Shimano says balances pedalling stiffness and walkability for efficient all-day events, sending your effort straight to the pedal.

Wide, walkable block pattern

A wider outsole pattern with TPU lugs for comfort and confidence off the bike; Shimano says it adds stability when walking or pushing the bike.

DYNALAST: optimal energy transfer

Shimano’s DYNALAST last holds the foot in place to reduce power loss at the pedal and fatigue on long rides, and its optimised toe spring reduces tension in the feet, calves and hamstrings.

Breathable upper

A synthetic leather upper with micro-perforations and a mesh insert that Shimano says improves ventilation and temperature regulation when you’re working hard.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.

Description

Shimano’s SPD gravel shoe for bikepacking and long mixed-terrain days. Shimano says its carbon-reinforced sole (stiffness index 8) balances pedalling stiffness with walkability, and the wider outsole with TPU lugs keeps you stable when walking or pushing the bike. Choose it for adventure riding; if you race gravel, the stiffer RX710 fits better.
