What’s different about the women’s XC302 and XC102?

The last. Shimano builds both on its SHIMANO DYNALAST Women’s last instead of the men’s DYNALAST and sizes them EU 36–44 on its women’s chart (we stock 36–42). Closure, sole (stiffness index 5) and rubber outsole are the same as on the men’s models. If the women’s range is too short or too narrow for you, the men’s XC302 starts at EU 36 and comes in Wide sizes.

Same sole, different closure. Shimano gives both a glass fibre-reinforced nylon sole with stiffness index 5, a low-stack midsole and a rubber XC outsole, so the XC302 isn’t stiffer. The XC302 swaps the XC102’s three hook-and-loop straps for a BOA dial with revised lacing, which is quicker to fine-tune on the bike, and the men’s XC302 also comes in Wide sizes (41–47 in black). Weights are close: Shimano quotes 308 g and 313 g for the men’s models in EU 43. The women’s versions follow the same pattern. If straps suit you, the XC102 saves money.

Can I use the XC102 for indoor cycling or spin classes?

Yes. Shimano designed the XC102 for outdoor and indoor riding and says its SPD cleats work with most indoor studio bikes as well as commuter and mountain bikes. The rubber outsole lets you walk normally off the bike. Just check that the bike has SPD pedals: 3-bolt road cleats don’t fit these shoes. The same applies to the women’s XC102.

Which pedals and cleats do the XC302, XC102 and MX101 take?

All three use Shimano’s 2-bolt SPD cleats, not 3-bolt road cleats. Shimano lists the PD-M540 and PD-M520 as best-match pedals for the XC302, the PD-M520 for the XC102 and the PD-M520 or PD-ED500 for the MX101, but any SPD pedal works. SM-SH51 cleats come with every Shimano SPD pedal; the SM-SH56 multi-release cleat lets you unclip by twisting in either direction or lifting the heel, which many beginners prefer. Shimano also says the XC102 fits most indoor studio bikes.

Shimano: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side — if between sizes, size up. Wide sizes keep the same length but add about 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
