Same sole, different closure. Shimano gives both a glass fibre-reinforced nylon sole with stiffness index 5, a low-stack midsole and a rubber XC outsole, so the XC302 isn’t stiffer. The XC302 swaps the XC102’s three hook-and-loop straps for a BOA dial with revised lacing, which is quicker to fine-tune on the bike, and the men’s XC302 also comes in Wide sizes (41–47 in black). Weights are close: Shimano quotes 308 g and 313 g for the men’s models in EU 43. The women’s versions follow the same pattern. If straps suit you, the XC102 saves money.

S-PHYRE XC903 or XC302?

The XC903 is Shimano’s race shoe: a stiff carbon sole on a low stack, ULTREAD XC rubber, two BOA Li2 dials with the lower one shielded, and an anti-twist heel cup. The XC302 brings some of that thinking (low-stack midsole, BOA dial, surround-wrapping upper) to a glass fibre-reinforced nylon sole with stiffness index 5, for much less money. Racing XC or cyclocross seriously: XC903. Trail riding, first races and gravel: XC302. Both come in women’s versions.

Which pedals and cleats do the XC302, XC102 and MX101 take?

All three use Shimano’s 2-bolt SPD cleats, not 3-bolt road cleats. Shimano lists the PD-M540 and PD-M520 as best-match pedals for the XC302, the PD-M520 for the XC102 and the PD-M520 or PD-ED500 for the MX101, but any SPD pedal works. SM-SH51 cleats come with every Shimano SPD pedal; the SM-SH56 multi-release cleat lets you unclip by twisting in either direction or lifting the heel, which many beginners prefer. Shimano also says the XC102 fits most indoor studio bikes.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.

DYNALAST

Shimano's cycling-specific last, the form that sets the shoe's shape and volume. Shimano says it secures the foot to reduce power loss at the pedal and fatigue on long rides, while an optimised toe spring reduces tension in the feet, calves and hamstrings. The Wide version adds volume around the ball of the foot on the same sole.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
