How is the women’s version different?

The women’s models are built on Shimano’s women’s-specific last, which Shimano says is tuned for the smaller volume and narrower proportions of women’s feet; the sole, closure and materials are those of the men’s shoe. We stock them in EU 36–42, and the size guide uses Shimano’s women’s chart. If you prefer a unisex model, Shimano says the Narrow fit of its DYNALAST 2.0 shoes, such as the RX710, is the closest equivalent to its women’s-specific models.

Both are Shimano SPD cross-country shoes with a carbon-reinforced midsole, a surround-wrapping upper, ULTREAD XC rubber and spike mounts. The XC703 is the competition model: stiffness index 9 against 7, and two BOA L6 Type Z dials with crossover lacing instead of the XC503’s single BOA L6C dial with its protective guard. The XC503 costs less and suits trail rides and first races; the XC703 is for racing and riders who want a stiffer, more precisely adjustable shoe. Both come in women’s versions too.

Can I fit toe spikes for mud or cyclocross?

Yes. The XC503 and XC703, and their women’s versions, have spike mounts in the ULTREAD XC outsole. Shimano calls it rider-tunable traction: fit toe spikes for slippery trails and leave them off when you don’t need them. Shimano’s XC503 page specifies 18 mm toe spikes.

Which pedals and cleats do these shoes need?

SPD, Shimano’s two-bolt off-road system: the shoes take SPD cleats and work with SPD pedals, not with three-bolt road pedals such as SPD-SL. Shimano’s recommended pairing for these models is the DEORE XT PD-M8100 pedal. The recessed cleat sits inside the sole, so you can walk normally off the bike.

Shimano: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side — if between sizes, size up. Wide sizes keep the same length but add about 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
