Both are Shimano SPD cross-country shoes with a carbon-reinforced midsole, a surround-wrapping upper, ULTREAD XC rubber and spike mounts. The XC703 is the competition model: stiffness index 9 against 7, and two BOA L6 Type Z dials with crossover lacing instead of the XC503’s single BOA L6C dial with its protective guard. The XC503 costs less and suits trail rides and first races; the XC703 is for racing and riders who want a stiffer, more precisely adjustable shoe. Both come in women’s versions too.

Gravel or MTB: should I pick an RX or an XC shoe?

Both families use SPD cleats, so either works on a gravel bike or a mountain bike. The difference is the sole. Shimano’s RX gravel shoes (RX600, RX710) use TPU outsoles tuned for pedalling efficiency and walking on mixed surfaces. Its XC shoes (XC503, XC703) use ULTREAD XC rubber with spike mounts for grip in mud and on technical ground off the bike. If you mostly ride gravel and walk on hard surfaces, choose RX; for mountain biking, muddy terrain or cyclocross-style running, choose XC.

Can I fit toe spikes for mud or cyclocross?

Yes. The XC503 and XC703, and their women’s versions, have spike mounts in the ULTREAD XC outsole. Shimano calls it rider-tunable traction: fit toe spikes for slippery trails and leave them off when you don’t need them. Shimano’s XC503 page specifies 18 mm toe spikes.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.

Which pedals and cleats do these shoes need?

SPD, Shimano’s two-bolt off-road system: the shoes take SPD cleats and work with SPD pedals, not with three-bolt road pedals such as SPD-SL. Shimano’s recommended pairing for these models is the DEORE XT PD-M8100 pedal. The recessed cleat sits inside the sole, so you can walk normally off the bike.

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
