S-PHYRE RC903 or RC903 PWR?

Shimano builds the PWR for track racers, sprinters and time triallists. It swaps the RC903's two low-profile BOA Li2 dials for a Li2 metal dial with a power boost guide plus a Velcro toe strap, and uses a reinforced surround upper with a tongue for a glove-like, more rigid hold. Both share the anti-twist heel cup. If you ride long road days rather than sprint, the standard RC903 is the more comfortable choice.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.

DYNALAST

Shimano's cycling-specific last, the form that sets the shoe's shape and volume. Shimano says it secures the foot to reduce power loss at the pedal and fatigue on long rides, while an optimised toe spring reduces tension in the feet, calves and hamstrings. The Wide version adds volume around the ball of the foot on the same sole.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
