Stiff fibreglass-reinforced sole

Stiff fibreglass-reinforced sole

A stiff, lightweight fibreglass-reinforced sole that Shimano says transfers more of your effort to the pedals, while the strap stabilises the foot.

Built for fast transitions

Built for fast transitions

A single T1-Quick Strap, an extra-wide opening and a large heel loop make the shoe quick to get on and off; Shimano Japan notes the loop is asymmetric so it’s easy to grab.

Breathable, quick-drying upper

Breathable mesh and a water-resistant upper with venting, for airflow and fast drying.

Made to wear without socks

A soft liner makes the shoe comfortable without socks, so you can skip them in transition.

DYNALAST

Shimano's cycling-specific last, the form that sets the shoe's shape and volume. Shimano says it secures the foot to reduce power loss at the pedal and fatigue on long rides, while an optimised toe spring reduces tension in the feet, calves and hamstrings. The Wide version adds volume around the ball of the foot on the same sole.

Frequently asked questions

Answered from this product’s published information. Questions about orders or anything else go to our team.

Is the TR501 good for triathlon transitions?

That’s what Shimano designed it for. A single T1-Quick Strap closes it in one pull, the extra-wide opening and large heel loop make it quick to slip on (Shimano Japan notes the loop is asymmetric so it’s easy to grab), and the soft liner is made for riding without socks. The mesh upper is vented and quick-drying for wet feet out of the swim. Shimano calls it a short-course triathlon racing shoe.

Does the TR501 come with cleats, and which ones fit?

No, Shimano sells the cleats separately. It takes SPD-SL (3-bolt) road cleats: Shimano pairs it with the yellow SM-SH11 cleats (6° float) and recommends SPD-SL pedals such as the PD-R7000.

TR501 or a road shoe like the RC503?

The TR501 is about speed in transition: one strap, a wide opening, a big heel loop and a sockless liner. A road shoe like the RC503 closes with a BOA L6C dial for finer adjustment and has a carbon-reinforced midsole that Shimano rates 8 for stiffness, against 6 for the TR501’s glass-fibre sole (men’s versions). If you race triathlon, take the TR501; if you mostly ride road and never change shoes against the clock, the RC503.

Do Shimano shoes run small, and what does Wide mean?

Shimano's own advice: cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side, so if you are between sizes, size up. Measure your foot length standing with your heel against a wall and use the chart in the size guide. Wide sizes keep the same length and sole but add roughly 9–10 mm of circumference around the ball of the foot — the answer if the length is right but the forefoot pinches.

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
