What’s new in the Ergolace 2?

Fizik names three changes from the first Terra Ergolace: a wider shape in the metatarsal area with more room for the toes, less bulk, and a revised X2 outsole that grips better on loose or uneven ground — Vibram Megagrip rubber, low mid-foot lugs for pedal contact and taller heel and toe lugs for pushing the bike. The upper is a quick-drying ripstop with a perforated Airprene bootie instead of a tongue, and the asymmetric speedlace closure carries over in its latest version.

Ergolace 2 or Terra Ergolace GTX?

Choose by weather. The Terra Ergolace GTX is the first-generation Ergolace with a triple-layer GORE-TEX membrane that Fizik calls waterproof and breathable, a slim, low-bulk silhouette and an X2 sole with a cushioned EVA midsole (stiffness index 3); 389 g. The Ergolace 2 is the newer, roomier shape with a quick-drying ripstop upper, a perforated Airprene bootie and Vibram Megagrip rubber, 410 g, but no membrane. Wet or cold rides: the GTX. Warm-weather gravel, trails and bikepacking: the Ergolace 2.

Is the Ergolace 2 waterproof?

No. Its upper is a light ripstop fabric with a perforated Airprene bootie, built to breathe and to dry quickly after wet rides, Fizik says — not to keep water out. For rain, look at the Terra Ergolace GTX, the Ergolace with a triple-layer GORE-TEX membrane; for real winter riding, the insulated Terra Artica X5 GTX or the Terra Nanuq GTX with its zippered ankle cuff.

Is this the clip-in or the flat-pedal Ergolace 2?

The clip-in version. Its X2 outsole has a two-bolt cleat track (Fizik lists it as a clipless off-road sole with cleat adjustment) and an Ergolace-specific nylon shank, stiffer than the flat version’s for better power transfer but shaped for walking. Fizik sells a separate Ergolace 2 Flat without the cleat track. On both, the low mid-foot lugs are designed so pedal pins sit in the grooves and hold the shoe in place.

Which Ergolace size should I buy?

Measure your foot length in millimetres and use Fizik’s chart in the size guide — the same chart as Fizik’s other shoes: 263.5 mm is EU 41, 270 mm EU 42, 277 mm EU 43, 283.5 mm EU 44. Fizik describes the Ergolace 2 as roomier than the first Ergolace, wider in the metatarsal area with more freedom for the toes, but publishes no advice to size up or down; the Terra Ergolace GTX has a regular fit. Between two sizes, use the size finder or try both.

Wider, roomier shape

Fizik calls the Ergolace 2 a new and improved version of a favourite among trail riders, bikepackers and gravel riders. The updated shape is wider in the metatarsal area, giving the toes more freedom and an overall roomier fit for long days on the bike — or long minutes pushing it — from daily exploration to bikepacking trips and backcountry rides on an e-MTB.

Ripstop upper, Airprene bootie

A light, breathable ripstop fabric cuts excess material and bulk, so the shoe dries fast. Wide PU-laminated areas add protection and durability, and the toe box is further reinforced against rocks and roots. Instead of a traditional tongue, a foot-wrapping bootie of perforated Airprene means fewer overlays and a pressure-free fit, and lets moisture vapour escape so the shoe dries sooner after wet rides, according to Fizik.

Asymmetric speedlace

The closure is ergonomic and asymmetric so it stays clear of the drivetrain. Proven around the world on the first Ergolace, the latest version of the lace system keeps the foot secure and stable in the wildest conditions, and the speedlace locks and releases easily, even on the move.

X2 outsole, Vibram Megagrip

The new X2 outsole pairs sticky Vibram Megagrip rubber with a zonal lug pattern. The mid-foot has lower, more regular lugs so pedal pins sit in the grooves and lock the shoe in place; under the heel and toes, where the sole doesn’t touch the pedal, taller, wider-spaced lugs dig in for hike-a-bike. This clip-in version adds an Ergolace-specific nylon shank shaped for walking, which Fizik says is stiffer than the flat version’s for better power transfer.

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
