Ergolace 2 or Terra Ergolace GTX?

Choose by weather. The Terra Ergolace GTX is the first-generation Ergolace with a triple-layer GORE-TEX membrane that Fizik calls waterproof and breathable, a slim, low-bulk silhouette and an X2 sole with a cushioned EVA midsole (stiffness index 3); 389 g. The Ergolace 2 is the newer, roomier shape with a quick-drying ripstop upper, a perforated Airprene bootie and Vibram Megagrip rubber, 410 g, but no membrane. Wet or cold rides: the GTX. Warm-weather gravel, trails and bikepacking: the Ergolace 2.

Is the Terra Ergolace GTX a winter shoe?

It is a wet-weather shoe rather than an insulated one: Fizik lists a GORE-TEX membrane and ripstop upper, but no insulation, fleece or thermal insole. For shoulder-season rain and mud it is the lighter, more walkable option. For freezing rides Fizik’s insulated models suit better: the Terra Artica X5 GTX (insulated GORE-TEX Cirrus XT membrane, fleece lining, Velcro strap plus BOA L6) or the Terra Nanuq GTX (fleece liner, thermal insole, zippered ankle cuff).

Which Ergolace size should I buy?

Measure your foot length in millimetres and use Fizik’s chart in the size guide — the same chart as Fizik’s other shoes: 263.5 mm is EU 41, 270 mm EU 42, 277 mm EU 43, 283.5 mm EU 44. Fizik describes the Ergolace 2 as roomier than the first Ergolace, wider in the metatarsal area with more freedom for the toes, but publishes no advice to size up or down; the Terra Ergolace GTX has a regular fit. Between two sizes, use the size finder or try both.

Versatile, stormproof

Its supportive fit is meant for day-after-day comfort on long adventures, and its casual look suits bike travellers who need one shoe to do it all.

GORE-TEX membrane

A triple-layer GORE-TEX membrane, waterproof and breathable, adds protection from the elements while keeping feet dry, according to Fizik. Hard-wearing ripstop woven uppers resist abrasion and tearing, a PU-laminated toecap and side reinforcements add protection and durability, and the Ergolace lacing pattern cradles the foot with an ergonomic lace-up closure.

Slim, low-bulk silhouette

Fizik designed the silhouette specifically to reduce bulk and avoid the puffy look of many mountain-bike shoes, so the Ergolace blends in with civilisation when the backcountry ride is over.

X2 outsole, EVA midsole

The X2 outsole balances efficient pedalling with flexibility for comfort and control on and off the bike. A compressed EVA midsole adds stability and cushioning; the Vibram rubber tread has a directional lug pattern spaced to bite into soft soil, in a compound Fizik chose for grip on slick rock. The extended cleat track has more set-back and more freedom for cleat placement.

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
