PNS Mechanism or Vega Carbon?

Both are Fizik race shoes with a full-carbon outsole rated 10 and two Li2 BOA dials. The Mechanism, made with Pas Normal Studios, uses the R2 outsole with a slightly rearward cleat, metallic bi-directional dials and a PU-laminated mesh upper (235 g, €450 RRP). The Vega Carbon has Fizik’s newer shape with reduced drop and a roomier toe box, the outsole integrated inside the shoe and an Aeroweave Pro upper (239 g, €399 RRP).

Why is the cleat position set further back on these shoes?

On its recent outsoles (Vento Omna’s R5, the Vento Powerstrap Aeroweave’s R3, the PNS Mechanism’s R2) Fizik places the cleat slightly further back than traditional shoes. It says this improves pedalling efficiency and reduces knee compression, and suits aggressive, forward aero positions. If you’re coming from another shoe, set your cleats up afresh rather than copying the old position.

How does Fizik sizing work, and do you have half sizes?

Fizik sizes its shoes by foot length: measure your foot in millimetres, heel to longest toe, and read the size from Fizik’s table in the size guide — 263.5 mm is EU 41, 270 mm is EU 42, 277 mm is EU 43. Fizik makes these road shoes from EU 36 to 48, with half sizes from 37.5 to 46.5. We stock whole sizes only, so compare your measurement with the table before ordering.

How stiff are Fizik’s road soles?

Fizik rates each outsole on its own stiffness index. In the Vento road shoes we carry, the Vega Carbon, Vento Powerstrap Aeroweave and PNS Mechanism are 10 (full carbon, which Fizik calls its most responsive), the Lyra is 8 and the Vento Omna is 6 (both nylon composite). Higher is stiffer and more direct; the lower numbers trade some directness for comfort on long rides. It’s Fizik’s own scale, so compare within Fizik rather than against other brands’ numbers.

Carbon sole

The sole plate is made of carbon fibre rather than nylon or carbon-reinforced nylon. Carbon is stiffer and lighter, so less of your effort is lost to flex; the brand’s stiffness index is in the spec table.

Metallic Dual-Dial Li2 BOA

Premium metallic Dual-Dial Li2 BOA dials adjust the instep and forefoot separately, in both directions. The sleek upper is a resilient PU-laminated material over comfortable mesh, which Fizik says reduces stretch and gives lasting support where it’s needed.

R2 carbon outsole

An engineered carbon layup saves weight and adds stiffness: index 10, which Fizik calls the most responsive outsole in its range. A wide vent inlet and deep internal channels cool the foot, and the cleat sits slightly further back to reduce knee compression, suited to aggressive, forward aero positions.

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimetres. Measure both feet and go by the longer one.
