Places to visit in Girona and its surroundings
Leave time to discover Girona away from the bike. Start with the old streets and riverside views of the Barri Vell, then use a rest day to explore medieval villages, the lake at Banyoles, the volcanic landscapes of La Garrotxa or the Costa Brava.
Before you go
Explore the old town on foot, with time for steps, gardens and café stops. Check official visitor information for tickets, access and opening times. Places outside Girona need their own travel plan; a regional recommendation is not necessarily a short ride from the city.
In Girona
Catedral de Girona
Walk up the cathedral steps and look back over the square before visiting inside. Its broad Gothic nave is a highlight. The cathedral and the Basilica of Sant Feliu are separate buildings; consult their official website for visits and tickets.
Muralla de Girona
Combine the Jardins dels Alemanys with a walk along the city walls for changing views over rooftops and mountains. Choose an accessible entrance for your plans and check the current access arrangements. This is a walking visit, not a cycling route.
Pont de les Peixateries Velles
The iron Pont de les Peixateries Velles, built by Eiffel’s company, frames the colourful Onyar houses. Cross between the Santa Clara side and the old town for views of the cathedral and Sant Feliu. Our store is now at Odeon, not on the Rambla.
Pont de Pedra
Pont de Pedra is an easy reference point for exploring central Girona and another viewpoint over the river. Make time for a xuixo, the local filled pastry, at a nearby bakery; our original guide mentioned Oriell on the approach.
Plaça de la Independència
The arcades of Plaça de la Independència surround a lively meeting place with restaurants and cafés. Reach it from Carrer de Santa Clara and continue across the river towards the Barri Vell for an easy extension of your walk.
Parc de la Devesa
La Devesa offers a greener change of pace beside the river, with avenues of tall plane trees. Combine a walk with the Ribes del Ter. Events vary through the year, so check the city programme instead of assuming a festival is taking place.
Beyond Girona
Estany de Banyoles
Banyoles is a rewarding lake-side visit or destination for a planned road or gravel ride. Walk along the water and leave time for a stop in town. Swimming is limited to designated areas and conditions; check local information before entering the lake.
Santa Margarida · Croscat · Santa Pau
Explore the volcanic landscapes around Santa Margarida and Croscat, then visit Santa Pau or Olot. Our original starting point was the Santa Margarida car park. Follow marked trails and current park access information, especially when planning several visits in one day.
Besalú
Besalú’s striking bridge over the Fluvià is an introduction to its medieval streets. Take time to walk through the village rather than treating it only as a photo stop. It can pair with Banyoles or Olot when your travel plan allows.
Monells
Monells is a favourite pause among the Empordà villages, with its arcaded square and stone streets. Our original route follows smaller roads before returning to Girona via Santa Pellaia. Keep the linked itinerary and check the climbing before setting out.
Peratallada
Peratallada rewards a slow walk through narrow medieval streets, stone façades and leafy corners. It is also a place to plan a meal during a day in the Baix Empordà; check restaurant availability when visiting in busy periods.
Pals
In Pals, explore the cobbled streets and tower, with a stop at Grava if it fits your plans. Our original guide also suggested a local rice dish or continuing to Platja de Pals. The village and beach are separate stops, so allow travel time.
Cadaqués · Cap de Creus
Cadaqués and Cap de Creus deserve a separate day for the coast, village streets and walking. Cala Nans is one excursion idea. Check current natural-park access and weather. Ask about Velodrom’s scheduled rides rather than assuming the former annual outing is available.
