BlackChili Compound

Continental’s signature tread compound and its answer to the balance between grip and rolling resistance. Continental says the latest polymers, specially developed carbon-black particles and filler materials give it its performance on road, gravel and mountain-bike tyres, from time trials to downhill.

Vectran Breaker

Vectran Breaker

A breaker spun from liquid-crystal polymer into a thermoplastic multi-thread yarn. Continental says the fabric is more cut-resistant than aramid with five times the tensile strength of steel, and that a Vectran breaker is lighter, more flexible and better against cuts than a comparable nylon breaker — without affecting rolling resistance.

LazerGrip

A lasered micro-profile structure that extends over the tyre’s shoulder; Continental says it gives outstanding cornering grip — “to make you one with the road”.

Active Comfort Technology

A layer embedded in the tyre construction that, Continental says, absorbs vibrations and smooths the ride.

Tubeless Ready (TR)

Continental says its TR casing is robust against damage and penetration from foreign objects, and that TR tyres can be run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting Continental recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre: spin the wheel to spread it, pump to the allowed maximum pressure and check the pressure again before the next ride.

Frequently asked questions

Answered from this product’s published information. Questions about orders or anything else go to our team.

Grand Prix 5000 S TR or Grand Prix 5000 clincher?

Same core recipe — BlackChili compound, Vectran Breaker, LazerGrip and Active Comfort Technology — so the choice is your setup. The clincher is tube type (3/330 TPI) and the lighter tyre on its own: 245 g against 280 g for the S TR in 700x28 black (Continental’s figures). The S TR (2/220 TPI) is Tubeless Ready, so you can run it tubeless with sealant or with an inner tube, and Continental states it is hookless compatible to its limited maximum pressure — it makes no such statement for the tube-type clincher. Tubeless or hookless wheels: S TR. Inner tubes on hooked rims: the clincher.

Is this Continental tyre hookless compatible?

Yes, within limits. Continental’s catalogue states that this tyre is hookless compatible to its limited maximum pressure and asks you to check the wheel manufacturer’s instructions and the tyre packaging. The packaging lists the maximum inflation pressure and the maximum inner rim width, which can differ between hooked and hookless rims.

How do I set up a Continental TR tyre tubeless — and can I use an inner tube?

Both work: Continental designs its Tubeless Ready (TR) tyres to run tubeless or with an inner tube. For the first tubeless mounting it recommends at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant per tyre; spin the wheel to spread the sealant, pump to the allowed maximum pressure, and check the pressure again before your next ride.

What does AS mean on the Grand Prix 5000 AS TR?

AS stands for AllSeason. Continental builds it on the GP5000 S TR and adds puncture protection and grip: a reinforced sidewall construction, a thicker tread for rough roads and all-weather grip, and a reflective strip on the black version. Continental calls it the strongest Grand Prix 5000. The price is weight — 315 g against 280 g for the S TR in 700x28 black (Continental) — so it suits winter, wet roads and long training miles more than racing. Continental notes the reflective strip does not meet ECE-R88 or the German StVZO reflector rules.

Description

The Grand Prix 5000 S TR is Continental’s tubeless-ready road race tyre — in Continental’s words the benchmark by which modern road tyres are judged, balancing speed, grip and puncture protection. It keeps the GP5000 recipe (BlackChili, Vectran Breaker, LazerGrip, Active Comfort) on a 220 TPI TR casing that runs tubeless or with a tube, and Continental states it is hookless compatible to its limited maximum pressure. For winter and wet roads pick the AS TR; for time trials, the TT TR.

  • Tubeless Ready: run it tubeless with sealant or with an inner tube
  • Hookless compatible to its limited max. pressure, per Continental
  • BlackChili Compound, Vectran Breaker and LazerGrip shoulders
  • Active Comfort Technology on a 2/220 TPI casing
  • Continental’s everyday race all-rounder of the GP5000 TR range
